AI Use Disclosure

Last Updated: July 2026

ScanaBug uses artificial intelligence as a core part of our bug, insect, and spider identification tools. This page explains, in plain language, what that means, what the AI does, and where human review fits in. This disclosure supports transparency principles reflected in the EU AI Act and similar frameworks in other jurisdictions.

1. You Are Interacting With an AI System

When you upload a photo to our Bug Identifier, Insect Identifier, or Spider Identifier tool, the identification result you receive, including the suggested species name, danger level, and related details, is generated by an AI image recognition system, not a live human expert reviewing your specific photo in real time.

2. What the AI Actually Does

Our AI model analyzes visual features in your uploaded photo, such as body shape, leg count, color pattern, markings, and, where relevant, web type or wing structure. It compares these features against a trained reference of known species characteristics and returns the closest matching identification, along with a general safety classification.

3. Where Human Review Fits In

While individual results are generated automatically, the underlying identification content, species descriptions, danger classifications, and reference material on this site are reviewed by qualified subject matter reviewers, credited on the relevant pages. This review applies to the content and classification logic behind the tool, not to each individual photo submitted by a user.

4. Accuracy and Limitations

AI identification, like any image recognition technology, has limitations. Accuracy can be affected by photo quality, lighting, unusual specimens, and visual similarity between species. Our system is reviewed periodically against a set of verified reference photographs to monitor and maintain accuracy, but individual results are not guaranteed to be correct. See our Terms of Service for the full accuracy disclaimer.

5. Your Photos and AI Training

Details on how uploaded photos are processed are described in our Privacy Policy. In short: we do not use your photos to train our AI model, and uploaded photos are never written to disk or stored on our servers — they are processed in memory and discarded immediately after your result is returned.

6. No Automated Decisions With Legal or Similarly Significant Effects

Our AI tool provides informational identification results. It does not make automated decisions that produce legal effects or similarly significant impacts on you, such as decisions about eligibility, pricing, or access to services. If this changes in the future, we will update this disclosure and our Privacy Policy accordingly.
