Privacy Policy

Last Updated: July 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how ScanaBug ("we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, stores, and protects information when you use our website and AI-powered bug, insect, and spider identification tools (the "Services"). We wrote this policy in plain language on purpose. If any part is unclear, contact us using the details at the end of this page.

1. Who We Are

ScanaBug operates this website and its identification tools. We are the data controller for the personal information described in this policy. You can reach our privacy team at privacy@scanabug.com.

2. Information We Collect

Photos you upload

When you upload a photo to identify a bug, insect, or spider, that image is sent to our servers and processed by our AI identification system in memory. It is not written to disk or stored in a database — it is discarded immediately after your result is returned. We do not require you to create an account or provide your name to use the identification tools, and we do not use uploaded photos to train or improve our AI models.

Device and usage information

Like most websites, we automatically collect certain technical information when you visit, including your IP address, browser type, device type, operating system, referring page, pages viewed, and the date and time of your visit. Your IP address is also used, separately, to enforce a daily rate limit on free identifications per address; it is held in temporary server memory for this purpose only and is not logged to disk or shared with third parties.

Cookies

We do not use tracking, advertising, or analytics cookies. If we introduce strictly necessary cookies for core site functionality in the future, this policy will be updated to describe them before they are used. Full details are in our Cookie Policy.

Information you provide directly

If you contact us by email, we collect the information you choose to include, such as your name, email address, and the content of your message.

3. How We Use Your Information

  • To operate the AI identification tool and return results to you
  • To maintain, secure, and improve the performance and accuracy of our Services
  • To detect, prevent, and address technical issues, fraud, or abuse of the Services
  • To respond to inquiries sent to our contact addresses
  • To comply with legal obligations

4. Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR)

If you are located in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, we process your personal information under the following legal bases:

Legal BasisWhen It Applies
ConsentAny optional future use of uploaded photos to improve our AI model, should we introduce that feature
Legitimate interestsCore site security, fraud prevention, and rate-limiting needed to operate the Services
Performance of a requestProcessing an uploaded photo to return the identification result you asked for
Legal obligationResponding to lawful requests from regulators or authorities

5. AI Photo Processing: What Happens to Your Uploaded Images

This section exists specifically because uploaded photos are the most sensitive data point on this site.

When you upload a photo, it is transmitted securely (HTTPS/TLS) to our identification system, which uses AI image recognition to analyze visual features and return a species identification, danger level, and related information. We do not use facial recognition, and our tool is not designed to process images of people. If a photo happens to contain identifiable people in the background, we do not use that image for any purpose beyond the identification request itself.

Uploaded photos are never written to disk or stored in a database — they exist only in server memory for the duration of the identification request and are discarded immediately afterward. We do not sell uploaded photos to third parties, and we do not currently use uploaded images to train or improve our AI models.

6. Sharing Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We may share information with:

  • Service providers who host our website or process uploaded photos for identification, under contracts that limit their use of your data to the services they provide us
  • Legal authorities, where required by law, court order, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of our users or the public
  • A successor entity, in the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, with notice provided to you where required by law

7. Your Privacy Rights

If you are in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland (GDPR)

You have the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing of your personal information, to object to processing based on legitimate interests, to request a copy of your data in a portable format, and to withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

If you are in California (CCPA/CPRA)

You have the right to know what personal information we collect, to request deletion of your personal information, to correct inaccurate personal information, to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information, and to limit the use of sensitive personal information. We do not sell personal information as defined under the CCPA. If you have enabled Global Privacy Control in your browser, we honor that signal as an opt-out request. To exercise these rights, contact us using the details at the end of this page. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.

If you are in another jurisdiction

Many other regions, including Brazil, Canada, and various US states, have their own data protection laws. If your local law grants you rights beyond those described here, we will honor them. Contact us and we will confirm what applies to your location.

8. Children's Privacy

Our Services are intended for a general audience and are not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without verifiable parental consent, in line with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it. Our identification tools do not require an account, name, or other personal details from any user, including children who may use them under a parent's supervision to identify a bug or insect they found.

9. Data Security

We use industry-standard technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including encrypted data transmission (HTTPS/TLS), restricted access to servers, and regular security review. No method of transmission or storage is 100 percent secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we work to protect your information using practices consistent with current industry standards.

10. Data Retention

Uploaded photos are never stored — they are processed in memory and discarded immediately after an identification result is returned. Rate-limiting data tied to your IP address is held in temporary server memory only and clears automatically. If you contact us by email, we retain that correspondence only as long as needed to resolve your inquiry, unless a longer period is required by law.

11. International Data Transfers

Our servers and service providers may be located in countries other than your own, including the United States. Where we transfer personal information from the EEA, UK, or Switzerland to a country without an adequacy decision, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last Updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be indicated with a notice on the site.
