Medical Disclaimer
Last Updated: July 2026
If you are experiencing a medical emergency, stop reading and call your local emergency number immediately. Do not wait to use our identification tool or read our content first.
1. Not a Substitute for Professional Medical Advice
The content on ScanaBug, including our Bug Bite Identifier, Insect Identifier, Spider Identifier, and all related articles, charts, and identification results, is provided for general informational and educational purposes only. It is not intended to be, and should not be treated as, medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
Always seek the advice of a physician, nurse, pharmacist, or other qualified health provider with any questions you may have about a bite, sting, or any other medical condition. Never disregard professional medical advice or delay seeking it because of something you read or saw as a result on this website.
2. Our AI Tool Does Not Diagnose
Our identification tools use AI image recognition to suggest a likely species and general danger level based on a photo. This is an identification aid, not a medical diagnostic tool. It cannot examine a bite or sting in person, assess your individual medical history, allergies, or symptoms, or determine whether a specific reaction you are experiencing is normal or requires treatment. Two people bitten by the same species can have very different reactions.
3. In a Medical Emergency
If you or someone near you is experiencing any of the following after a bite or sting, treat it as a medical emergency and call your local emergency number immediately, such as 911 in the United States, 999 in the United Kingdom, or 112 across the European Union:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Rapid heartbeat, dizziness, or sudden weakness
- Loss of consciousness or fainting
- Widespread hives or a rash spreading rapidly across the body
- Any symptom that feels severe, unusual, or rapidly worsening
Do not wait to use our identification tool or read our content before seeking emergency care in any of these situations.
4. Species Identification Does Not Confirm a Bite Source
Even with a clear photo, it is not always possible to confirm with certainty that a particular insect or spider caused a particular bite or sting, especially if the organism was not directly observed biting. Our danger level classifications (Harmless, Caution, Avoid, or similar labels) describe general characteristics of a species and are not a personalized medical risk assessment for your situation.
5. No Doctor-Patient Relationship
Use of this website, including submitting a photo for identification or reading any content on this site, does not create a doctor-patient, nurse-patient, or any other healthcare provider relationship between you and ScanaBug or any contributor, reviewer, or author associated with the site.
6. Expert Review of Content
Content on this site relating to bites, stings, and species safety is reviewed by qualified professionals, as credited on the relevant pages. This review process is intended to support the general accuracy of our educational content and does not substitute for individualized medical evaluation of any person's specific situation.
7. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, ScanaBug disclaims all liability for any loss, injury, or damage arising from reliance on the medical or safety-related content on this website. This disclaimer should be read together with our Terms of Service.
